The Foothills Trail follows the ridge that marks the eastern edge of the Horsetooth Reservoir. Starting in the north at the Reservoir Ridge Natural Area the trail crosses into the Horsetooth Reservoir County Park and then into the Maxwell Natural Area. Along the way it branches off into several other loop trails and overlook trails.
The Foothills Trail is generally steeper and rockier the further north you are and especially so around the Soldier Canyon Dam. The most scenic portion of the trail follows the Reservoir between the Sunrise and Rotary Park day use areas. The easiest way get to the top (other than to park up there) is to begin near Hughes Stadium at the Maxwell Natural Area.
