Trail Report: Turtle Rock 5.5.15

I think I start to go through Vedauwoo withdrawals if I don't get up there at least once a month. Vedauwoo is a magical place. I love it there. This morning I looked at the fog and rain on top of the summit and decided to bundle the kids up anyway and head to Vedauwoo. We hiked along the eastern section of the Turtle Rock trail until they got tired, then I schlepped them out, tossed one on my back and the other in our Chariot and walked up the road and along the paved pathway through Box Canyon (just past…

Trail Report: Green Rock

Sunshine! Blue Sky! I had to head up to the Snowies this morning. It was worth shoving my kids into their snowsuits to get in what just might be one last snowshoe of the season in. Here are the current trail conditions from the Green Rock trailhead. Date: 4/10/15 Time: 9 am-10:030 am MDT Temperature: 35-40°F (ish). Weather: Warm, bright and sunny. Wind: None. At all. It was beautiful. Trails Hiked: Portions of Libby Creek trail Trail Conditions: Soft snow with a nice thick crusty top. We snowshoed but you might be able to get away with just hiking right now. We also only…

12 Trails of Christmas: Medicine Bow Rail Trail

The 22 miles making up the Medicine Bow Rail Trail are Laramie's best kept secret...especially in the winter. That's why we're adding it to our list of favorite local places for winter outdoor recreation. If you haven't skied or snowshoed along the rail trail you need it, trust me. With pristine snow, most of it unskied and untouched this is the place to go if you're looking for minimal elevation changes, surprising views and just to get away from the hustle and bustle of some of our more crowded local trails (ahem, Tie City). Be prepared to break track if…

12 Trails of Christmas: Snowy Range Trails

Did you know that there are two miles of really fun and really easy cross-country ski and snowshoeing trails just at the base of the Snowy Range Ski Area? These trails are a hidden gem. They are rarely used, sometimes groomed and a fantastic place to take novice skiers or out of town relatives who want a dose of the mountains but might be struggling to acclimate. In fact if I were to put together the perfect day on the mountain that has a little bit of something for everyone it would be a morning of downhill skiing at the…

Wheelchair Accessible Trails Near Laramie, Wyoming

Recently I spent some time skiing with the Paralympic Biathlon Team on Casper Mountain. To say that the experience was life changing was an understatement. Every day I was inspired by these adaptive athletes and their determination, drive and never-quit attitude. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4nnO41m6Rag As I was talking with the athletes and learning about their injuries my thoughts kept drifting to Just Trails. We tried so hard to think of everything when we put together our business model. But, one thing we didn't think about is which trails are accessible to those in wheelchairs or those who might be blind or need…

Top 5 Reasons to Climb Medicine Bow Peak

Imagine sitting at 12,013 feet downing a handful of M&M's and looking at a view like this. Not too shabby huh? One of our favorite hikes of all time is the trek up to the top of Medicine Bow Peak and consequently, it's our most popular trail page. A few weeks ago we headed that direction and we were amazed at how many people were climbing to the top. This peak does not discriminate. We saw old people, middle-aged people, teenagers, and even another family packing a baby to the top (right on!). We saw people hiking in blue jeans, running…

The Trek To Swastika Lake

There's a hard way, and an easy way--but we usually accidentally take the hard way. You see, we have these friends who we like to explore with but we have to be prepared for the unexpected when we hike with them. Together we've skied through a blizzard in the dark, almost lost children in a gigantic mud puddles, and now we can say that we've trudged straight up a mountain over piles of deadfall together. Actually they are awesome and every time we hike, ski, or snowshoe together is memorable...literally. So, a few months ago we snowshoed together into a charming little place…
