Trail Report: Tie City 5/27/15

I spy with my little eye the first wildflowers of the season! Well, they may not be the first but two weeks of travel have kept me away from Pole Mountain where we typically see the first flowers emerge straight out of snowbanks! I sometimes forget how lucky we are to live in Laramie where we can drive 10 minutes from town and be right at the Tie City trailhead. Yesterday our local hiking group met up at Tie City for a few muddy hours of chasing kids down a trail and {failed} attempts to keep them out of puddles and…

Trail Report: Turtle Rock 5.5.15

I think I start to go through Vedauwoo withdrawals if I don't get up there at least once a month. Vedauwoo is a magical place. I love it there. This morning I looked at the fog and rain on top of the summit and decided to bundle the kids up anyway and head to Vedauwoo. We hiked along the eastern section of the Turtle Rock trail until they got tired, then I schlepped them out, tossed one on my back and the other in our Chariot and walked up the road and along the paved pathway through Box Canyon (just past…

Trail Report: River Trail (Little Laramie Trailhead) 4.28.15

It was a beautiful spring morning in the Medicine Bow National Forest. We started from the Little Laramie trailhead in the Snowies and meandered along the River Trail. From the trailhead it looked like the trail would be a good mix of snow and dirt so we left our snowshoes in the car. We ended up postholing a bit but the snow wasn't too deep. If you're headed there in the next few days I would recommend snowshoes just in case. Here are the current trail conditions. Date: 4/28/15 Time: 9-11:00 am Temperature: 45-50°F (ish). Weather: Beautiful, sunny, warm Wind: None Trails Hiked:…

Trail Report: Tie City 4.23.15

I thought it was time to hang up our snowshoes and cross-country skis but Mother Nature had other plans. For that we are thankful! This morning we headed up to the Tie City trailhead to snowshoe with our local hiking group. {Insert shameless plug...if you have kids and like to hike and live in the Laramie or Cheyenne area you're all invited to come hike with us!} Here are the current trail conditions from the Tie City trailhead. Be forewarned that currently the roads to the trailhead (and the Happy Jack trailhead) have not been plowed so be prepared to park & gear-up…

Trail Report: Green Rock

Sunshine! Blue Sky! I had to head up to the Snowies this morning. It was worth shoving my kids into their snowsuits to get in what just might be one last snowshoe of the season in. Here are the current trail conditions from the Green Rock trailhead. Date: 4/10/15 Time: 9 am-10:030 am MDT Temperature: 35-40°F (ish). Weather: Warm, bright and sunny. Wind: None. At all. It was beautiful. Trails Hiked: Portions of Libby Creek trail Trail Conditions: Soft snow with a nice thick crusty top. We snowshoed but you might be able to get away with just hiking right now. We also only…

Walking a Fine Line…

This morning when I woke up I planned on writing about happy things like the trail conditions at Tie City (slushy, melting, but skiable) and Curt Gowdy State Park (dry, beautiful, dust off your mountain bike and take the afternoon off). But, then I read this article and it got me all fired up. I'm still all fired up. I need to go hike it off. Please excuse me while I step on my soapbox. In Hawaii hiking bloggers did something stupid.  They wrote about and promoted a hiking trail that encouraged people to trespass on private property. Naturally, we're outraged.…

5 Things You Need for an Epic Spring Break

Every year as a kid spring break was a big deal. My family didn't travel anywhere but we did use the time to ski, hike, play outside, visit Yellowstone and see how much fun and adventure we could cram into a week. As an adult I think it's important to take a little spring break too--even if it just means skipping a day of work to head into the mountains or taking the time to clean out the garage, slap some storage wax on the ski's and tune the bike. We've written about spring break adventures before & even written…

Trail Report: Turtle Rock 3-8-15

It's been slow around here lately. I spent last week in Vermont with my biathlon team coaching at the National Guard biathlon championships. While I've been hitting the trails on cross-country ski--they haven't been our local trails. But this morning I broke away with a few friends to go check out the trail conditions at Vedauwoo. It was a beautiful bluebird day, the kind of spring day where we left our snowshoes in the car but wished we would have had them in certain places, microspikes in other places, our trekking poles for extra grip on the icy trail. We…

Trail Report: Tie City Trail Network 2-22-15

This morning Al said to me "Hey, Rebecca you should go skiing. I'll hang out with the boys but you should go and have some fun." I wanted to go skiing, and the offer of a few hours of kid-free skiing was too good to pass up but I also wanted to sit in front of the fireplace wrapped in a fleece blanket working on my new baby, the Hike Like A Woman website. Finally about 10:30 I peeled myself from the couch, changed into my ski clothes and headed up the mountain. And I am so glad I did.…
