Doesn’t that mean you are following the cat, since obviously you haven’t met it coming towards you? I am missing how seeing fresh scat means you’re being followed.

If you can identify fresh mountain lion scat – congratulations you are already a step ahead! Find the smallest member of your party and attach them to your backpack facing backwards to protect your rear. I hear mountain lions like to attack from behind.

    • Scat identification is a big problem for me. I often find myself in a situation where I’m thinking “It’s sort of big, it has hair in it, it’s definitely not a bear, it’s sort of pointy at one end….” is it a mountain lion, I think it might be, but I’m never certain.
