To Hike or Snowshoe?

Happy New Year! There's only one way to work all that champagne out of your system and it's to snowshoe! You all made a new years resolution to snowshoe more this winter right? We're back with our Wednesday snowshoe series talking about when to hike and when to snowshoe. So far we've discussed the history of snowshoeing, why to snowshoe, how to choose a pair of snowshoes, where to buy snowshoes, the clothing and gear needed to snowshoe, and what to pack for a day on the trails. Today we're talking about when to snowshoe vs hike. A lot of…

What to Pack for a Day of Snowshoeing

Last night Santa packed around lumps of coal for naughty children all over the world. But if you were a nice kid and he personally delivered a pair of snowshoes underneath your tree you've come to the right place. While that Christmas turkey cooks it's time to take those snowshoes for a spin! As part of our Wednesday snowshoe series we've discussed the history of snowshoeing, why to snowshoe, how to choose a pair of snowshoes, what to wear snowshoeing and what gear you need to snowshoe, and where to get snowshoeing equipment. Today we're getting ready to go snowshoeing by…

Essential Clothing and Gear for Snowshoeing

As part of our snowshoe series we've talked about the history of snowshoeing, why to snowshoe, how to select a pair of snowshoes, and where to buy snowshoes. Today we're discussing some of that extra stuff, like what to wear snowshoeing and what gear to bring along. We dress for snowshoeing just like we do for cross-country skiing or winter hiking. Because it's such an aerobic activity layers are crucial. What to wear: We start with a good baselayer of merino wool, or other warm, moisture wicking synthetic material, add a midlayer of fleece and top it off with an outerlayer…

Where to Buy Snowshoes

As part of our Wednesday snowshoe series we've talked a bit about the history of snowshoeing, why to snowshoe and how to choose a pair of snowshoes. Today we're talking about the best places to buy a set of snowshoes. But don't go shopping just yet! Next week we'll talk about the extra gear (poles, boots etc) that you need to go with your snowshoes. Like most gear, if you're a beginner I recommend buying used or renting a pair of snowshoes for your first few adventures to be sure that it's a sport you really want to invest money…

How to Choose a Pair of Snowshoes

As part of our Wednesday snowshoe series we've discussed the history of snowshoeing and reasons to snowshoe. Today we're talking about how to choose a pair of snowshoes. We'll start with the basics. The components of a snowshoe, the types of snowshoes and how to fit a snowshoe. When I started snowshoeing I knew nothing about snowshoes. I simply headed to Sierra Trading Post and picked a pair of Redfeather Snowshoes out of the bargain barn for 25 bucks. I didn't know that snowshoes should be sized or that there were even different types of snowshoes. I guess I did…

5 Reasons to Snowshoe

I love to ski. For most of my life the thought of trading in my skis for a pair of snowshoes seemed ridiculous. To me snowshoeing looked like hard work, after all you don't get to enjoy the "glide" like you do on skis. So why snowshoe? I didn't start snowshoeing until a few years ago and I have to admit that I still prefer skiing but snowshoeing does have it's advantages at times. Today as part of our snowshoe series we're talking about why you should put snowshoes on your Christmas list. 1. Snowshoes are relatively inexpensive. Like most outdoor gear…

History of Snowshoeing

One winter when I was in college it snowed 3 feet in 24 hours. My subaru station wagon was buried, the roads weren't plowed and I needed to run errands. So, I pulled out my cross-country skis and I skied around town. I felt a bit self-conscious with the weird looks that I got from the few cars that were on the roads. Ironically, the best form of transportation on that snowy day was on my ski's. It's interesting that just a century ago our ancestors used ski's and snowshoes as forms of transportation during the winter. Now, (at least…
