Trail Report: Turtle Rock 5.5.15

I think I start to go through Vedauwoo withdrawals if I don't get up there at least once a month. Vedauwoo is a magical place. I love it there. This morning I looked at the fog and rain on top of the summit and decided to bundle the kids up anyway and head to Vedauwoo. We hiked along the eastern section of the Turtle Rock trail until they got tired, then I schlepped them out, tossed one on my back and the other in our Chariot and walked up the road and along the paved pathway through Box Canyon (just past…

Trail Report: River Trail (Little Laramie Trailhead) 4.28.15

It was a beautiful spring morning in the Medicine Bow National Forest. We started from the Little Laramie trailhead in the Snowies and meandered along the River Trail. From the trailhead it looked like the trail would be a good mix of snow and dirt so we left our snowshoes in the car. We ended up postholing a bit but the snow wasn't too deep. If you're headed there in the next few days I would recommend snowshoes just in case. Here are the current trail conditions. Date: 4/28/15 Time: 9-11:00 am Temperature: 45-50°F (ish). Weather: Beautiful, sunny, warm Wind: None Trails Hiked:…

Trail Report: Stone Temple/ Ignoramus 4.25.15

Confession: I went hiking at Curt Gowdy State Park on both Friday and Saturday. Maybe it's because after Thursday's adventure at Tie City I just didn't feel like putting my kids into snowsuits and strapping on snowshoes. Or maybe it's just because in the past few months I've fallen in love with Curt Gowdy State Park. Whatever it is we spent a lot of time on Stone Temple and Ignoramus this weekend. Here are the current trail conditions as of yesterday, although that I'm sure with last nights rain you can count on more mud. Date: 4/24 & 25/15 Time: 8-11:00 am…

Trail Report: Tie City 4.23.15

I thought it was time to hang up our snowshoes and cross-country skis but Mother Nature had other plans. For that we are thankful! This morning we headed up to the Tie City trailhead to snowshoe with our local hiking group. {Insert shameless plug...if you have kids and like to hike and live in the Laramie or Cheyenne area you're all invited to come hike with us!} Here are the current trail conditions from the Tie City trailhead. Be forewarned that currently the roads to the trailhead (and the Happy Jack trailhead) have not been plowed so be prepared to park & gear-up…

Trail Report: Green Rock

Sunshine! Blue Sky! I had to head up to the Snowies this morning. It was worth shoving my kids into their snowsuits to get in what just might be one last snowshoe of the season in. Here are the current trail conditions from the Green Rock trailhead. Date: 4/10/15 Time: 9 am-10:030 am MDT Temperature: 35-40°F (ish). Weather: Warm, bright and sunny. Wind: None. At all. It was beautiful. Trails Hiked: Portions of Libby Creek trail Trail Conditions: Soft snow with a nice thick crusty top. We snowshoed but you might be able to get away with just hiking right now. We also only…

Trail Report: Shoreline/Crow Creek/Granite Ridge (Curt Gowdy State Park) 3-10-15

Something weird happened today. Normally I'm all about enjoying the snow before it melts into spring. But today I just didn't feel like layering my kids up and dealing with the hassle that is all the extra gear we need when we ski or snowshoe. So, we hopped in the car and headed to Curt Gowdy State Park. I was curious what the trail conditions were and I knew that we'd find mud and that alone would make my kids happy campers. We spent a few hours wandering around the park. We hiked on portions of the Shoreline, Crow Creek…

Trail Report: Turtle Rock 3-8-15

It's been slow around here lately. I spent last week in Vermont with my biathlon team coaching at the National Guard biathlon championships. While I've been hitting the trails on cross-country ski--they haven't been our local trails. But this morning I broke away with a few friends to go check out the trail conditions at Vedauwoo. It was a beautiful bluebird day, the kind of spring day where we left our snowshoes in the car but wished we would have had them in certain places, microspikes in other places, our trekking poles for extra grip on the icy trail. We…

Trail Report: Tie City Trail Network 2-22-15

This morning Al said to me "Hey, Rebecca you should go skiing. I'll hang out with the boys but you should go and have some fun." I wanted to go skiing, and the offer of a few hours of kid-free skiing was too good to pass up but I also wanted to sit in front of the fireplace wrapped in a fleece blanket working on my new baby, the Hike Like A Woman website. Finally about 10:30 I peeled myself from the couch, changed into my ski clothes and headed up the mountain. And I am so glad I did.…

Trail Report: Tie City Snowshoe Trail

Winter has returned to Pole Mountain, well at least for now. This morning we loaded up the car and headed to the Tie City to snowshoe along the multi-use snowshoe trail. It was a beautiful morning. Here were the current trail conditions: Date: 2/18/15 Time: 9-10 am MST Temperature: 25-30°F & warming up Weather: Sunny with a few scattered clouds Wind: Breezy but not knock you on your ass windy Trail Snowshoed: Multi-use trail (perfect for fat bikes and snowshoes) Snowpack: Windblown and balding on the summit (how's that for creative writing) but surprisingly nice and deep through the forest. Snow…

Trail Report: Tie City Trails

We ran into something shocking yesterday morning at the Tie City trailhead. No WIND! Okay, well there might have been a gentle breeze but it was nothing like the typhoon strength blasts that we normally encounter when trying to exit our car, trudge across the icy parking lot and gear up. Here were the current trail conditions as of yesterday morning: Date: 2/10/15 Time: 9-10 am MST Temperature: 35°F Weather: Cloudy with a few random snowflakes Wind: Slight breeze Trails Skied: Campground Loop, Meadow, Ridge and Alder (the easy stuff, our kids got tired of skiing on the Campground Loop and I had…
