How to Change a Diaper on a Hike

We're back with more in our hiking with babies and toddlers series today. If you've been following us every Wednesday for the past few weeks you know that I'm a huge fan of packing light (it can be done when hiking with kiddos) and starting every hike with full bellies and empty diapers.  But, as a parent it's inevitable that no matter how many times we change a diaper before a hike, a mountain top blow out is gonna happen. Today, we're talking about changing diapers on the trails and how to pack out those icky dirty diapers. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6p6Nb3GSfRc&feature=youtu.be We use…

Tips for breastfeeding on the trails

Lately we've been asked a lot of questions from hiking mama's who are breastfeeding and looking for tips and advice on how to feed their baby's easily on the trails. This post that I wrote last year when I was breastfeeding our first baby has been one of our more popular posts. Now that I'm feeding baby #2 things have evolved a bit. As part of our hiking with babies and toddlers video series here's a short video with tips for breastfeeding on the trails. http://youtu.be/4Tb6d1xht4I What tips do you have for feeding babies in the wilderness? Also, if you're…

The Trailhead Routine

One of the most important things I've learned about hiking with babies and toddlers is the importance of not starting a hike when my kiddos are hungry or when they have full diapers. Long gone are the days when I would just grab my pack out of the trunk and be on my merry little way. Taking 10-15 minutes at the trailhead to fuel up has prevented many tears on the trail. Here's a glimpse into our trailhead routine. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0hwmfIeHVcQ You know your family hikes a lot when your kids don't have a bedtime routine but they do have a…

How to Pack for a Day Hike with Babies & Toddlers

Two years ago when I was trying to figure out how to hike with a brand new baby I scanned the internet for advice on what to put in my daypack. I read an article written by a woman who packed her breast pump (along with her breastfed baby) up a mountain and realized that I was better off developing my own packing list based off of our route, location, the weather and the needs of our baby. Here's a short video with what was in my pack during a hike on Monday. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FXLE9awtT70 My packing list has evolved over…

How to choose equipment to carry babies & toddlers on a hike

When it comes to hiking with babies and toddlers one of the most difficult things is trying to figure out how to carry them, especially when you've got 2 kids that need to be carried (but, we'll get into that later). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7n3wg1O60FY As part of our hiking with babies and toddlers series, today we're talking about ways to carry kids. A few highlights from the video: Here's what's worked for us, if you've tried something else, agree or disagree let us know. New babies (<1 month old): We hike with new babies in a wrap. It's not the most comfortable…

How to dress babies and toddlers for a hike

This is the second video in our series all about hiking with babies and toddlers. Today we focus on how to dress babies and toddlers for a hike. http://youtu.be/nCfM6NP1fCY A few highlights from the video: I think about the 'big 3' when I dress my kiddos for summertime hikes: layers, hats, and sturdy shoes. My kid's wear cotton. I know, cotton is bad news in the woods. But, finding quality clothing made from synthetic materials is not only difficult (I'd rather be hiking than shopping) but it's also very expensive. So my kiddos wear cotton but we always have a…

New Blog Series: Hiking with Babies & Toddlers

We're taking a break today from our backcountry navigation series to announce a new blog series that starts tomorrow! We've been getting a several questions lately about how we manage to hike with a new baby and a toddler. Since we spend a lot of time out on the trails exploring with our little ones we thought we'd throw together a video blog series with a few things that we've learned. We've decided to make this a video series because as busy parents we may not have time to read a long, detailed blog post but we can find 90…

How To Teach a Toddler to XC Ski

This is the final post of our Cross-Country ski series for the winter. I like to think that we saved the best topic for last. It's also a topic that probably applies to just a few of our readers. Today's post is about teaching a toddler to ski. Some of my earliest childhood memories are of wearing my red and white polar bear ski's inside of my parents house and moving awkwardly on ski's across the backyard. I'd even take them outside in the summer and try to ski on grass. My ski's were one of my favorite "toys"--in fact…

DIY: Toddler Long Underwear

Last week I was inspired by Melissa at Adventure Tykes, who wrote an article 'Clothing Tips for Winter Fun' for Women's Adventure Magazine. One of the things that I struggle with the most is outfitting our toddler for the trails and staying on budget. Sometimes I have to get a little bit creative...and that means upcycling some of our old outdoor clothing into useful pieces of clothing for our toddler. In no way do I consider myself "crafty" or a "sewer"...in fact if you're a seamstress you have my permission to head back over to Pinterest because my sewing methods…
