Twisted Ankle (Discussion)

Monday's #NowWhat scenario wasn't all that exciting. It was vague and a twisted ankle is not nearly as sexy as thinking about what you'd do if you thought you were being stalked by a mountain lion. But, the whole point is to think about scenarios that could happen, and let's be honest...a twisted ankle is a very likely scenario out on the trails, especially on our rugged and awesome hiking trails here in the Rocky Mountains. Most people recommend the RICE (rest, ice, compression, elevation) method with an injury like a twisted or sprained ankle. But, let's be  honest. If you're on…

Mountain Bike Crash (Discussion)

On Monday we posed this question: According to discussions on twitter, mountain bikers out there were happy that this has never happened to them. But, it's happened to Al at Curt Gowdy State Park which makes the scenario so cool. Here's what happened. Al crashes mountain bike. Ends up being attacked by a cactus. Manages to ride 3 miles to the trailhead with body full of cactus needles. I get a text message, it reads. "On my way home. I need you to pull cactus needles out of my ass." It's the text message that every wife dreams of receiving.…

Mountain Bike Crash (Scenario)

Okay, we're taking a break from the wildlife to bring you another #NowWhat scenario. This is getting fun, here is this week's discussion question. True story, this has happened to one of us at Curt Gowdy State Park, it was not fun. Read Set Discuss!!! What would you do? Chime in below in the comments, on twitter, facebook, pinterest or google+. We'll let you know what we'd do a post a recap on Thursday so stay tuned!

A Bear on the Trail (Discussion) #NowWhat

On Monday we posed this question: And we got a bunch of great responses. So what would we do? Ummmm, probably pee our pants because we saw a bear (cool) and then pee our pants again because "Ahhhh, there's a bear!!!" We have had beat encounters before...But hiking right in to a Mama bear and her cubs is no joke. We would probably freeze, grab our bear spray back up slowly and get the hell out of there. If she charges hopefully a good dose of capsaicin would stop her in her tracks. One of our readers shared this video which…

You hike right into a Mama bear and her cubs…#NowWhat (Scenario)

We had so much fun with last week's Mountain Lion scenario that we had to throw in a bear scenario this week as part of our #NowWhat series. This week's situation is as follows: Read Set Discuss!!! What would you do if you saw evidence of mountain lions while hiking? #NowWhat

On Monday we proposed this question: We asked our friends on twitter, facebook, pinterest and google+. The responses were great and entertaining. This was a tricky question because what does mountain lion scat even look like? Also, I think in most cases a hiker wouldn't even know if they are being stalked by a mountain lion until it is right on top of them. So, what would we do? If we were hiking with a group we would just keep on hiking, stay close together, make some noise and try to really be aware of our surroundings. We would pay close attention to rocky outcroppings and…

What do you do when you see fresh mountain lion scat on the trail? #NowWhat (Situation)

This is the first in our #NowWhat series. The goal is to think about what to do in certain situations and then discuss. Here's this weeks scenario. Read Set Discuss!!! What would you do? Now What? New Blog Series

Have you ever been on an outdoor adventure and found yourself thinking "oh no, now what am I going to do?" I have. Two years ago Al and I were hiking up Mount McConnell. Al had taken our baby (we only had one at this point in our lives) and was hiking some of the shorter trails at the base of the mountain. I was lucky enough to get to hike to the peak all by myself, without a crying baby. It was heaven. Until... I ran into a patch of snow and lost the trail. Slipped on the ice.…

5 Ingredients For An Epic Spring Break

The best spring break I ever had was when Al and I were broke college students. One morning we were headed up to the Snowy Range to go skiing when we suddenly had the thought to just go somewhere different instead. So, we turned the car around and went back to town to pack. An hour later my white Subaru station wagon was full of skis and gear and we were headed north with no real destination in mind. Living like dirtbags we spent a few days wandering around skiing and exploring. On the way back to Laramie my car…
